Over 603 inmates are still missing seven days after terrorists attacked Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Gunmen suspected last Tuesday night attacked the prison facility, leaving the facility heavily damaged by the firepower brought by the assailants.

Multiple sources told SaharaReporters that the gunmen invaded the facility around 10 pm.

The Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in a video last Wednesday claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the video, the terrorists are seen shooting their way into the facility.

The Nigerian government said 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack.

“A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack.

“As at the time of this report, 443 have been recaptured, 551 inmates are currently in custody, 4 inmates dead and 16 inmates sustained various degrees of injuries and are being treated at the moment.

“However, efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates,” the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar, had said.

Multiple security sources on Tuesday told SaharaReporters that only 402 inmates were available during roll call on Monday night out of the 1,005 held at the facility before the attack.

“As at lock-up yesterday, the number of available inmates was 402. That's the total number of those in custody currently,” a source told SaharaReporters.

This leaves 603 inmates, including terrorists unaccounted for.
