Indications have emerged that the 19 security officers killed by terrorists in Kebbi State late Tuesday were operatives in the entourage of the Deputy Governor of the State, Samaila Yombe who escaped death by the whiskers.

It was gathered that Yombe was  in Kanya in Dangu Wasagu Local Government Area of the state to commiserate with families of 63 vigilante members killed by bandits on Sunday.

When the deputy governor was at the village, hundreds of bandits on motorcycles struck and engaged the security personnel in intense gun-battle.

The terrorists said to have targeted the deputy governor, in a bid to kill him, came in large number and overpowered his security operatives.

Sources said if the soldiers had not arrived on time, Yombe would have been killed by the rampaging bandits.

After about three hours of gun-battle, 13 soldiers and six policemen were killed by the bandits before they escaped when reinforcement arrived the village.

Premium Times reports that Yombe was in Kanye to commiserate with the 63 people killed by bandits on Sunday.

Ahmed Umar, a local, had said: ““Some youth protested on Monday over the incessant bandits’ attacks that are recently becoming too much.

“All the youth in the four areas under Zuru emirate were angry, so Samaila (Mr Yombe) was asked by the governor to reach out to the locals. It is obvious that the bandits heard he was coming and decided to attack him while he was in the village.”
