UPDATED: Army yet to speak on five of its men reported killed in Rivers

The Army has kept mum following the reported killing of five soldiers in fresh attack on security formations by gunmen in Rivers State.

It was gathered the gunmen attacked the soldiers at Abua, Odua Local Government Area of the state early hours of Monday.

Security commanders in the state were said to be holding an emergency meeting at the Police Headquarters along the Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The commanders were reportedly jolted by sporadic attacks and killings of their operatives by gunmen they identified as members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

The fresh incident occurred barely 24 hours after gunmen sacked security checkpoints along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road killing about eight security operatives in the process.

A senior official of the Abua-Odua Local Government Area confirmed the latest incident saying it happened at Omelema community.

Spokesman of the 6 Division of the Nigeria Army in Port Harcourt, Maj. Charles Ekeocha, had maintained silence over the development.

But another source said the victims were attached to an oil company operating in the area adding six soldiers were present when the attackers struck.

He said while four of the soldiers died on the spot, two others sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in the area.

Efforts to reach the army 6 division of spokesman Charles Ekeocha has proven abortive as he is yet to respond to calls.
